Sippy Cups!
When to start, which kinds worked for you? Did you use them for water? Eventually for milk? Do tell!

At 6 months old, my daughter's pediatrician said I was supposed to be giving my daughter water in a sippy cup everyday, particularly for the fluoride content. SIppy cup? I had just tackled the challenges of introducing cereal and now I had to change it up? Was there ever going to come a point where I could wallow in the mastery of my daughter's current stage before she had to go and grow and develop?! The nerve! Well after many trials and tribulations (and almost twelve cups later) I have discovered that the playtex beginners cup with handles is an excellent, no-spill sippy cup that my daughter can now completely feed herself with. As she grew I became pressured to offer her a cup that was more "a-la-big-kid"! I eventually stumbled upon the munchkin twisted sippy cup that had a unique design and ridges for my daughter's tiny hands to grasp. A very wise friend of mine told me to use a sippy cup when I transferred to whole milk, and so I switched the Playtex handles cup to the milk cup and kept the new water cup for water. One more gem I HAVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT is the stroller leash from Babies R Us. It doesn't matter what brand you go with, just tether that cup to the stroller or car seat. TRUST ME, you will thank me!
ReplyDeleteStart early! Babies should start exploring sippy cups long before they can use them efficiently. At 1 year, they should really be off the bottle completely. Prolonged use of the bottle can lead to speech deficits down the road. The bottle suck is a premature pattern that if not extinguished early enough, can lead to a protruding tongue and ultimately a lisp in speech (sorry for the use of lingo...it's the speech therapist in me coming out). My baby is 9 1/2 months old and we are already working on cup drinking. He loves it! On a side note, moving a baby into solid foods early is important for similar reasons.
